Violent clashes break out between Chinese and Iranian personnel at Masjed Soleyman Petrochemical Industries complex
– On Monday morning, November 19th, more than 1,000 Iranians and Chinese personnel were involved in serious altercations at the Masjed Soleyman Petrochemical Industries plant.
On Sunday, November 18th, a Chinese foreman reprimanding an Iranian welder, attacked him with a metal rod, fracturing his head so badly that the worker had to be rushed to a local hospital. This led to the intensification of the conflict which continued into the late hours of Sunday’s work day. According to reports, a number of ordinary people, bystanders also joined the melee to support Iranian workers against Chinese nationals. Eventually, petrochemical officials were forced to close the plant in order to calm the infuriated employees.
On Monday morning however, Iranian workers gathered in front of the petrochemical entrance, preventing the Chinese workforce from entering the plant, which ultimately led to further clashes. In the aftermath of the incident, area locals appeared at the entrance to the plant.
Despite the photos and reported information about this case, Ardavan Ghanbari, the Masjed Suleiman county executive, denied the report. In an interview with the Islamic Labor News Agency (ILNA), Ghanbari did however confirm the closure of the petrochemical plant and said that the Chinese foreman who was in charge of the construction and implementation of the Masjed Soleyman Petrochemical Project, had been fired.
