On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported the Trump administration will be designating the Khomeiniist regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Though the article did not reveal the source of the prospective determination, it had been contemplated for a long time.
The IRGC, which was formed after the 1979 takeover of Iran, were originally dedicated to the protection and preservation of the clerical regime, unlike Iran’s traditional military forces which are meant to protect the country. The traditional Iranian Military however, has been dampened by the IRGC’s superintendency. The Revolutionary Guards have air, naval, and sea units and are thought to have approximately 125,000 members; and over the past 40 years have become equally, if not more, powerful than various Mullahs and clerical authorities.
In addition to having considerable influence in Iran, the Revolutionary Guards have been operating in Syria and oversee all of Lebanon’s Hezbollah terrorist group.
As expected, the IRGC issued a retaliatory response on Saturday, claiming that any such step by the U.S. will lead to Tehran putting the US military on its terror list. On his Instagram, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, head of the national security committee in the Majles (Islamic parliament) wrote: “If the Revolutionary Guards are placed on the U.S. terrorist list, we will put that country’s military on the terror blacklist next to Daesh (ISIS).”

Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander-in-chief of IRGC also responded by making the customary threats: “If Americans are stupid enough to add the Revolutionary Guards to the terrorist list, American forces will not enjoy the ‘calm’ they enjoy today. We will take counter-measures in keeping with the policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran and will not hesitate to put retaliatory measures in place.”
Some in the Pentagon and CIA have expressed reservations about this decision, warning that it will increase the risk of attacks against US troops. The list of IRGC and Hezbollah’s unprovoked attacks around the world however, speaks for itself.
On Monday, the State Department tweeted announcing the designation of the sanctions on the terror organization.
On April 8, @SecPompeo announced the United States’ plan to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including its Qods Force, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). https://t.co/MXU0WmRTq7 https://t.co/rrzeK8ESPx

National Security Advisor, John Bolton, a longtime opponent of the regime in Tehran also tweeted:
Today’s unprecedented move to designate the IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization demonstrates our commitment to maximize pressure on the Iranian regime until it ceases using terrorism as tool of statecraft. The corrupt IRGC invests in terrorism, while Iran’s people suffer.

The Trump administration scrapped the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA or Iran Deal) in 2018 and re-imposed rigid sanctions on various authorities and organizations belonging to the Khomeiniist regime, citing the regime and the IRGC’s sponsorship of terrorist groups and covert nuclear programs. Over the years, the Khomeiniist regime authorities and their proxies around the world have bombed American embassies and military installations, murdered hundreds of American service members, as well as carried out bombings and attacks in various parts of the globe that killed innocent citizens of other countries. They have also kidnapped, imprisoned, and tortured foreign nationals. The Iranian regime has plundered the wealth of its own people in order to carry out these heinous acts.
